February 2025 Featured Charity: Shelbourne Community Kitchen
The Shelbourne Community Kitchen grew in response to a local need to increase access to nutritious food for people living on a low income. Community groups and churches in the Shelbourne Valley are committed to improving food security by establishing an inclusive seed-to-plate community kitchen.
Since 2013, the Kitchen has welcomed people from the wider community through its unique neighbourhood food centre model. The Kitchen provides opportunities for people to prepare and share healthy meals together, work together to grow food and build gardening skills, and connect with other community resources. Through working together, program participants also become resources for one another.
About Shelbourne Community Kitchen
The Shelbourne Community Kitchen is a warm and welcoming neighbourhood food centre, located in Saanich B.C. With passionate staff, a hard working board of directors, and an incredible team of volunteers, we work to alleviate social isolation and lower barriers to healthy food for over 1600 adults and nearly 700 children who are living on low income in our community.
People who are living on low income come to The Kitchen to:
- Prepare and share healthy meals together in our Food Skills Programs;
- Access nutritious food through our Pantry Program;
- Work together to grow food and build skills in our gardens;
- And connect with other community resources while becoming resources for one another.
As with all our Charities of the Month, proceeds from the sale of tasters at the Growler Bar, as well as the donations we collect, will be given to this awesome and important group of folks.
